The Air Norton S is the Strat replacement version of the full-size Air Norton. It’s warm sounding, very well balanced, and has the same unique tonal characteristics as the original. The original Air Norton wasn’t designed for a specific position or type of guitar, but it has become most popular in the neck position of trem-equipped guitars for progressive music. The S version is also a very good bridge pickup for all types of rock. Its combination of medium output and harmonic bite are very effective for single-note soloing as well as chords.

The DiMarzio ISCV2 Evolution Single Coil Pickup is specifically designed for use with DiMarzio Evolution models in a wiring configuration made popular by Steve Vai.
When the 5-way switch is in the 1 or 5 position, you hear the neck or bridge humbucker. When played in the 2 or 4 position, the middle single-coil combines in parallel with one coil of either humbucker and produces a distinctive tone with hum cancellation. The middle (3) position gives a true single coil sound which is not hum canceling and is not like an Evolution humbucker.

One thing has stayed consistent throughout John Petrucci’s long and successful career: the DiMarzio pickups in his guitars. John has been pushing the envelope of progressive metal since the late eighties, and the DiMarzio LiquiFire 7 Neck Model resulted from our most recent collaboration with John. He used it throughout Dream Theater’s tenth studio album, “Black Clouds & Silver Linings". John swears this is the best live and studio sound he has ever had. It's not difficult to make a vintage single-coil pickup that's clean and bright, but not so easy if you also want the high strings to sound sweet above the 12th fret. The True Velvet was designed to make this happen by tuning the coil to a frequency range that’s bright but not thin. We combined this with a magnet stagger specifically designed to enhance string balance, which produces great clarity, even with full chords. The True Velvet™ Neck and Middle models have the same specs except for reverse polarity on the middle pickup for hum cancellation in the 2 and 4 positions. The True Velvet™ Middle comes standard with hand-ground magnets and vintage cloth covered wire.
