Billy Sheehan told us about an amazing 18-year-old who had recently arrived in California and had blown everyone away with his musicianship, speed, and awesome technical ability in Racer X. Naturally, we immediately asked Paul to become a DiMarzio endorser. It was the start of a great relationship.
Recently, Paul has been heavily into our Area™ pickups. He’s also been playing a lot of Racer X-style instrumentals, so the time was right for signature Paul Gilbert single-coil sized DiMarzio pickups. The outcome of our teamwork are the new Injector Neck and Bridge Model pickups. You can hear them on Paul’s latest CD, “Fuzz Universe”.

The DiMarzio ISCV2 Evolution Single Coil Pickup is specifically designed for use with DiMarzio Evolution Neck and Bridge models in a wiring configuration made popular by Steve Vai.
When the 5-way switch is in the 1 or 5 position, you hear the neck or bridge humbucker. When played in the 2 or 4 position, the middle single-coil combines in parallel with one coil of either humbucker and produces a distinctive tone with hum cancellation. The middle (3) position gives a true single coil sound which is not hum canceling and is not like an Evolution humbucker.

The PAF Joe is the latest neck pickup we developed for Joe Satriani. Joe wanted a neck position humbucker that combined the best qualities of the PAF Pro with those of a late 50s Gibson humbucker. Joe describes this tone as being “tubular”. Have you ever heard a bridge pickup that made a guitar sound like a giant mosquito attack? If you’ve run into this problem, The Tone Zone is the solution. The Tone Zone is hot enough to qualify as a high-output pickup, but it has a wider dynamic range — hard picking will produce a lot of power, and softer picking will be much cleaner and quieter. It’s got tremendous bass and low-mid response to reinforce the bottom end and make the overall sound bigger. The highest single notes have depth, and chords sound huge. Patented dual-resonance coils reproduce more overtones than you’d expect from such a fat-sounding pickup. It makes a great match with an Air Norton, PAF Joe, or PAF Pro, and split-coil mode produces an excellent single-coil sound as well.
