Here are the characteristics that make a great vintage humbucker: a soft magnetic field, sweet tone, perfect balance between warmth and clarity, the ability to go from clean to distorted by pick attack alone. For our PAF: 36th Anniversary Bridge we wanted to continue in the path of pioneers such as Seth Lover (designer of the original Patent Applied For humbucker) and create pickups that combine all of the characteristics of great vintage humbuckers. These pickups are not merely clones. We re-engineered the PAF: using our patented technology and Larry DiMarzio’s own 1959 cherry sunburst Gibson: Les Paul: as the reference. Larry’s Gibson: Les Paul: has a uniquely amazing sound and it’s not only due to the pickups – it’s the total fusion of many elements of the guitar itself. Although the pickups have a weak magnetic field, the sound is well defined – almost like a single-coil. We duplicated the weaker magnetic field in order to allow the strings to vibrate longer, as well as focus and articulate the attack and output. We use computer-controlled winders to consistently layer the 42-gauge custom-coated wire, achieving the exact frequency response we want. Then it’s dipped in our custom formula to eliminate squeal and microphonics.
The PAF: 36th Anniversary Bridge is hotter than the Neck. It is not only for set neck 24″ scale guitars, but it’s also an excellent bridge pickup for trem-equipped bolt-ons.

The Evolution Neck and Bridge humbuckers are the result of two years of research to come up with the right sound for a very demanding player: Steve Vai and his Ibanez Jems. Both pickups are designed for maximum impact and power. The neck pickup is fat, punchy and loud. The bridge pickup is tight, aggressive and louder. Both pickups have our patented dual-resonance configuration to reproduce more harmonic overtones than conventional humbuckers. Joe Satriani has used FRED as his main bridge pickup for years. In 2005, Joe asked us for a hotter and bigger version to replace the FRED in his new Ibanez guitars. The new model called the Mo’ Joe is all about tone and definition. Its name says it all. It has more power than FRED but it doesn’t sacrifice clarity or dynamics. Additionally, all the harmonics that made FRED so good are all there ready to jump out at the touch of a guitar pick. Having more output makes the Mo’ Joe a perfect match for the PAF Joe in the neck position. The combination delivers great versatility and control from rhythms to solos.

The PAF Joe is the latest neck pickup we developed for Joe Satriani. Joe wanted a neck position humbucker that combined the best qualities of the PAF Pro with those of a late 50s Gibson humbucker. Joe describes this tone as being “tubular”. Have you ever heard a bridge pickup that made a guitar sound like a giant mosquito attack? If you’ve run into this problem, The Tone Zone is the solution. The Tone Zone is hot enough to qualify as a high-output pickup, but it has a wider dynamic range — hard picking will produce a lot of power, and softer picking will be much cleaner and quieter.
